Numenera: From Many, One
A paramilitary organization spread throughout the Steadfast and the Beyond, the Grey Company is known for hiring out its mercenaries for nearly any job at any price and without too many scruples. Their recruitment officers claim to be as devoted to justice as the Angulan Knights or the Order of Truth, but such a claim is a bald-faced lie known by prince, priest, and peasant alike. For proof, any person in the Steadfast would point to two operations in particular—an assault on an offshore research facility that, while it successfully destroyed experimental creatures, also disrupted maritime trade; and a failed attempt to collect on the bounty for a noblewoman wrongly suspected of performing “illegal” esotery. The Company’s elite squad, the Steel Hunters, made an attack on a palace where the lady had taken shelter, leading to the deaths of at least four guards along with many innocent servants. So much blood was spilled for so little gain that even the Hunters themselves turned on each other in disgust.
After these events, the Grey Company has changed its approach to completing jobs. Rumors have spread about its black ops through the infiltration of many other organizations to take down targets from the inside. Regardless, its technological and military prowess still make it a force to be reckoned with.
